Manchester City have escaped a Fifa transfer ban despite admitting to breaking the same rules on registering young players that led to Chelsea receiving a two-window ban.

The club have instead been given a £315,000 fine and seem to have benefited from Fifa’s new disciplinary code, which came into force last month and offers the possibility of significantly reduced sanctions for accepting wrongdoing.

The code states that “a party may accept responsibility and request the Fifa judicial bodies to impose a specific sanction”. City had made their final submission to the disciplinary committee this month and the governing body took the club’s admission that they had broken the rules “into account” when deciding the punishment.
